About the Leader Y-strainers range

We hold the Leader agency directly. The Leader Y-strainer range runs to 10 families, 15 mm to 350 mm, in 5 body materials.

A strainer is specified by its screen, not by its body. The perforation or mesh has to be fine enough to protect what sits downstream and coarse enough that it does not blind in a week. Across a range the other decision is the blowdown connection, which is what turns cleaning from a shutdown into a routine task.

The Leader range here is supplied in cast iron to IS 210 for larger bores on water duty, carbon steel WCB for steam and higher pressures and forged brass on small-bore service lines. Material is decided by the medium and the temperature before it is decided by price: a body that suits cold water will not necessarily suit the same line carrying steam.

Bores available are 15–25 mm, 32–50 mm, 65–100 mm, 125–200 mm and 250–350 mm. Above roughly 50 mm the pattern shifts to flanged cast bodies, and flange drilling, weight and lifting become part of the order rather than an afterthought.

The range is supplied with Flanged and Screwed BSP (parallel) ends. Which one is right is a question about the line, not about the valve, and it is the detail most often left off an enquiry.

Pressure classes cover PN 16, PN 20, Class 150 and PN 25. The class is a rating on the body, not a statement about the line: a valve is selected on the pressure and temperature it will actually see in service.

This range is manufactured to ASME B16.5, BS 10 Table F and BS 10 Table E. Where a tender names a standard, quoting it back on the enquiry is what stops an approved substitution being queried later.

Where an inspection certificate or an IBR form is required, say so with the enquiry — it is arranged with the manufacturer at order stage and cannot be added to a valve already despatched.

An enquiry for Y-strainers is quickest to price when it states the perforation or mesh required, and what the screen is protecting as well as the sizes and quantities. Without it we have to come back and ask, which adds a day to the quotation for no reason.
