About the Leader butterfly valves range

Every Leader butterfly valve we supply is listed on this page: 28 families spanning 40 mm to 600 mm, in 3 body materials.

Choosing within a butterfly range is mostly choosing the liner and the operator. The liner sets the temperature and the medium the valve will take; the operator sets whether it can actually be turned at the size ordered. Wafer bodies are the cheaper fit, lugged bodies allow downstream pipework to be removed with the line live.

The Leader range here is supplied in cast iron to IS 210 for larger bores on water duty, carbon steel WCB for steam and higher pressures and CF8 stainless where the medium attacks a copper alloy. The medium chooses the material. Cost only breaks a tie between two bodies that both suit the duty, and a body that fails on temperature is not cheaper for having cost less.

Sizes span 40–50 mm, 65–100 mm, 125–200 mm and 250–600 mm. Across that range the construction changes more than once, so a size at the top of the range and one at the bottom are related products rather than the same product in two sizes.

The range is supplied with Wafer and Lugged ends. Which one is right is a question about the line, not about the valve, and it is the detail most often left off an enquiry.

Ratings in this range are PN 16 and PN 25. Specifying a class above the duty costs money and weight for nothing; specifying below it is the failure that is found the hard way.

Construction is to BS 5155, EN 593 (BS 5155) / API 609 and EN 593. That is the reference to quote if the valve has to be approved by a consultant before the order is released.

Test certificates are available against the order where the product carries them. It is worth confirming the requirement before the order is placed rather than at delivery.

An enquiry for butterfly valves is quickest to price when it states the medium and temperature, which decide the seat liner, and the size at which you want a gear operator rather than a lever as well as the sizes and quantities. Without it we have to come back and ask, which adds a day to the quotation for no reason.
