The straight-through bore means an open gate valve behaves much like a length of pipe. A rising stem gives visual confirmation of position without touching the handwheel, at the cost of clearance above the valve. The IS 210 cast iron body is the economical choice at larger bores. It suits steady water service but not lines that see mechanical shock. Flanged ends make the valve straightforward to remove for servicing without cutting pipe, and are the norm once bore and weight rule out threaded joints.
