The disc approaches the seat square-on, which is why it tolerates throttling that would wreck a wedge. Socket-welded ends suit small-bore high-pressure lines where a threaded joint would be a weak point. Usual duties are bypass lines, feed regulation and any point where flow has to be set and held.
