The disc stays in the flow path when open, which costs a little pressure drop but keeps the valve short, light and cheap to support. Gear operation keeps the effort manageable at the larger bores, where a lever would need more force than one person can apply. The wafer body clamps between two pipe flanges, keeping face-to-face length and weight to a minimum.
